Neighbourhood coffee bar · est. on the corner

One room, four coffees, and a bar that tells you what it poured

We roast in small batches upstairs and change the board when the beans change — not when the season does. Sit in, read the card, ask for a taste before you commit.

Espresso

Harbour Line

Blend · Colombia + Brazil · Medium

Our house shot. Cocoa, toasted almond and a soft plum finish that holds its shape through milk. Pulled a touch longer than most bars pull it.

Filter

Nueva Aurora

Colombia · Washed gesha · Light

Bergamot, white peach and jasmine. Delicate enough that we serve it black only, in a tasting glass, and we will happily pour you a thimble first.

Filter

Kirinyaga Ridge

Kenya · Washed SL28 · Light-medium

Blackcurrant and tomato-leaf sharpness, heavy body. The one to order if you think you do not like filter coffee.

Decaf

Late Shift

Peru · Sugarcane process · Medium

Decaf we would drink ourselves: dried fig, cane sugar and no papery edge. Available as espresso, batch brew or a bag to take home.

Upstairs

We roast small, so the board changes often

A 5kg drum roaster runs three mornings a week above the cafe. That size is a constraint, not a boast: it means we buy one or two sacks at a time, pull a lot the moment it stops tasting its best, and write a new card rather than stretch a coffee past its window.

  • Roast daysMonday, Wednesday, Friday, before open
  • Batch size5kg drum, single-lot, never blended in the drum
  • Rest7 days for espresso, 4 for filter, dated on every bag
  • BuyingOne or two sacks per lot, bought on cup score and repeat relationships

The kitchen

Six dishes, cooked properly, all day

There is no brunch rush window here and no separate lunch card. The same six dishes run from open to last orders, which is why they arrive quickly and taste the same at half past four as they did at nine.

  • EggsFree range, from a farm two counties over

Plan your visit

The week at Vela Signal

The room has a rhythm. If you want a quiet table, a fresh bun or a seat at the cupping, this is how to pick your morning.

Monday

Roast day — the whole room smells like it

Quiet after 10

Fresh bags hit the retail shelf around midday, dated and ground to order.

Tuesday

Slow morning, long tables free

Quietest day

The best day to bring work or a book. Buns are laminated tonight for Wednesday.

Wednesday

Bake day — sourdough and cardamom buns

Bread out by 9

Come early. When the bake is gone, toast comes off the card for the day.

Thursday

Open cupping at the back bench

Late morning

Free, no sign-up, six or seven seats. We taste whatever landed that week and you tell us what you smell.

Friday

Second roast, full board, busiest counter

Peak 8–10

Expect a short queue at the door end. Batch brew is the fast order.

Saturday

Bake day, kitchen at full tilt, prams welcome

Busy all morning

Tables turn quickly; the window bench is first come, first served.

Sunday

Records on, no laptops, kitchen only

Calm, late start

A deliberately unproductive day. Screens off, conversation on.

Before you come

Useful questions

Can I work here on a laptop?

Yes on weekday mornings and afternoons, at the long tables and the back bench. We ask you to close the laptop at the window seats on Saturday, and Sunday is a screen-free day across the whole room.

Which milks do you keep, and do they cost extra?

Whole, semi-skimmed and a barista oat, all at the same price. We keep one soy for tea but do not recommend it in espresso — it splits against our house blend, and we would rather tell you that than serve it.

Are dogs allowed inside?

Well-behaved dogs are welcome everywhere except the back bench when a cupping is running. There is a water bowl by the door and a hook at the end of the counter.

Is there room for a pram or a wheelchair?

The entrance is step-free and the main aisle takes a chair or a double pram. The two-top tables near the window are tight; ask at the counter and we will move a chair to open up the long table instead.

Which coffee should I buy to brew at home?

Tell us your brewer and how you take it. For milk drinks and moka pots, take the house blend. For a V60 or Aeropress, take whichever single origin is on the filter board. We grind to your brewer at the counter, or leave it whole if you have a grinder.

Can I bring a group of eight or ten?

Small groups are fine if you come before nine or after two, and we will join the long tables for you. For anything larger, or for a fixed time, send a hire enquiry and we will hold the back half of the room properly rather than leaving it to luck.

Two things worth writing to us about: hiring the room, and beans for your own counter.

Enquiries

Hire the room or open a bean account

You never need to book a table — just walk in. Use this for out-of-hours hire, a private cupping, or a wholesale account for your own cafe, studio or office. We read these ourselves and reply in our own words.

We reply within two working days, usually between roasts.
